África central, 1870. Acompanhado por um grupo de caçadores indígenas, o antropólogo escocês Jamie Dodd (Joseph Fiennes) atravessa a floresta tropical à procura de uma nova espécie. Ao encontrar uma tribo de pigmeus, Jamie acredita ter achado o "elo perdido" que faria a ponte evolucionária entre o homem e o primata. Ele captura dois pigmeus chamados Toko (Lomama Boseki) e Likola (Cécile Bayiha) para apresentá-los na Academia de Ciência de Edimburgo. A amizade que surge entre os três termina colocando em risco a carreira do cientista.
