Em 1937, Katie Morosky (Barbra Streisand), uma judia comunista, desperta a atenção de Hubbell Gardiner (Robert Redford), um protestante de uma rica família, em virtude de ser uma pacifista convicta. Cada um segue seu caminho, ele se dedicando a escrever e ela trabalhando em uma rádio. Quase oito anos depois os dois se encontram por acaso em Nova York, quando Katie vê Hubbell, que cochila em uma boate. Provavelmente por serem bem diferentes e os opostos se atraem os dois se apaixonam. Porém Katie sente-se pouco à vontade com os amigos de Gardiner, sendo que quando algo não a agrada, o que acontece freqüentemente, é motivo para um acalorado protesto. Após discussões e o fracasso do primeiro livro de Hubbell, eles vão para Hollywood, onde Gardiner escreverá o roteiro de um filme para J.J. (Bradford Dillman), um amigo de Hubbell que se tornou produtor.
