A amizade poderosa formada por dois jovens negros é o centro gravitacional de Nickel Boys. O filme baseado no romance de mesmo nome vencedor do Prêmio Pulitzer acompanha a aliança entre Elwood e Turner, dois adolescentes afro-americanos que são enviados para um brutal reformatório juvenil na Flórida no ápice da implementação das leis segregacionistas de Jim Crow. A forte irmandade criada entre os dois forja um refúgio de esperança e carinho em meio aos horrores e às violências sofridas dentro e fora da detenção. Enquanto Elwood cultiva em Turner uma nova e mais otimista perspectiva do mundo, Turner conhece a realidade desse mundo bárbaro e ensina a Elwood os truques necessários para sobreviver.
