Em 1939, um piloto de testes (Mel Gibson) fica fora de si quando a mulher com quem pretendia se casar é atropelada e fica em coma irreversível. Assim, ele concorda em ser voluntário de um experimento criogênico que o deixará por um ano em estado de animação suspensa, mas o projeto é esquecido e ele também. Cinqüenta anos depois, ele é acordado acidentalmente por um garoto (Elijah Wood) e, após o impacto inicial, vai morar na casa do garoto que, junto com sua mãe (Jamie Lee Curtis), tenta ajudá-lo de todas as formas possíveis nesta singular situação.
