A família do ratinho Fievel está triste, vivendo numa casinha humilde, sendo perseguida pelos gatos que os maltratavam na Europa. Fievel sonha em ser um destemido xerife como seu herói Wylie Burp. Surge, então, um gato trapaceiro que usando um ratinho marionete convence a família a ir para o Velho Oeste. Todos partem, mas entre tiroteios, cowboys e eletrizantes cavalgadas, Fievel descobre que o plano do gato vigarista é transformar toda a família em ratobúrgueres.
