Anna Dunlap (Diane Keaton) foi criada de modo conservador, tendo sido casada por 7 anos com o arrogante Brian (James Naughton), com quem teve Molly (Asia Vieira). Sexualmente reprimida, Anna se divorcia e sai em busca de uma grande paixão. Vai morar em Cambridge, Massachusetts, onde conhece Leo Cutter (Liam Neeson), um escultor irlandês liberal. Anna muda seus hábitos, vivendo mais plenamente e descobre o prazer sexual verdadeiro. Até que um dia Brian leva Molly para a sua casa e diz a ela que vai brigar na Justiça pela guarda da menina, usando como justificativa que Cutter havia abusado dela. Anna então fica dividida entre o amor da filha, do namorado e suas convicções.
