Com a morte do tio, o ex-coronel do exército Sebastian Procolo herda a metade de um sítio onde se encontra uma floresta milenar. A outra metade é herdada pelo seu jovem sobrinho, Benvenuto, que não pode tomar posse das terras, pois ainda cumpre seus estudos na cidade. De mentalidade pragmática e racional, Procolo só pensa em tornar o local rentável, ignorando completamente sua aura mágica. Movido pela ambição, ele desejará a morte do sobrinho e o monopólio sobre o local. Ao derrubar as árvores, porém, Procolo acabará igualmente com as criaturas fantásticas que ali habitam. Inspirado no livro homônimo de Dino Buzzati.
