Cass Silver, xerife de uma pequena cidade do Kansas, espera problemas com a chegada uma ferrovia recém-concluí­da. O dono do saloon da cidade está expandindo os negócios e quer livrar-se do xerife. Para piorar, o seu suplente, Thad Anderson, é o filho de um pistoleiro que feriu Cass anos antes.
