O filme é uma adaptação de uma das obras mais conceituadas da escritora inglesa Virgina Woolf, "Orlando", em que o realizador, Paul B. Preciado, dirige uma carta à escritora a dizer que sua personagem Orlando tornou-se real: o mundo está a tornar-se mais "orlandesco". Preciado convocou um teste de elenco com 25 pessoas diferentes, todas trans e não-binárias, para interpretar a personagem fictícia de Virginia Woolf, enquanto narram as suas próprias vidas. O filme reúne ainda uma série de imagens de arquivo sobre pessoas trans de meados do século XX que evocam os verdadeiros Orlandos históricos na sua luta pelo reconhecimento e visibilidade.
