Último trabalho de Marcello Mastroianni, que morreu logo depois das filmagens. Aqui, ele é uma espécie de alter ego do cineasta Manoel de Oliveira. A história começa quando um realizador português contrata um ator francês para atuar em uma coprodução franco-portuguesa. Apesar de ter nascido na França, o artista é filho de um português, morto há muitos anos. Durante o processo do filme, ele decide visitar o vilarejo do pai, na esperança de encontrar uma velha tia. O diretor e outros dois atores são seus acompanhantes. Na viagem, ele revive lembranças da infância na região.
