No século XII, quando o rei da Inglaterra Ricardo Coração-de-Leão é sequestrado na Áustria ao retornar das Cruzadas, o príncipe John tenta usurpar o trono, favorecendo os normandos invasores em detrimento dos saxões. Contra esta situação, o nobre Robin Hood organiza nas florestas de Sherwood um bando de salteadores e rebeldes. Enquanto ataca os normandos e rouba dos ricos para dar aos pobres, Robin se apaixona por Marian, protegida do rei Ricardo, que o príncipe quer casar com o arrogante Sir Guy.
