Com roteiro e direção de G. Blay, Díptico Mário Peixoto recupera escritos de Mário Peixoto presentes em seu livro O Inútil de Cada Um, obra literária concebida em vários volumes, dos quais somente o primeiro, "Itamar," foi lançado ao público em 1984. O filme é dividido em duas partes, adaptações cinematográficas de dois capítulos do livro que formam um verdadeiro díptico, artefato formado por metades unidas, articuladas entre si. O projeto iniciou-se com o média-metragem Nuanças (produzido em 2011), sendo concluído dez anos depois com a produção de Hibernação (filmado em 2021).
