Padre Merrin é assombrado por suas experiências na Segunda Guerra Mundial quando tropas nazistas o forçam a cometer atrocidades. Na sequência, ele renuncia à fé e começa a trabalhar como um arqueólogo. Ele viaja ao Quênia, onde uma igreja bizantina do século V mantém relíquias antigas e encontra Sarah, uma médica e sobrevivente de um campo de concentração. As ocorrências estranhas que se sucedem o reúnem com o mal do qual tentou escapar.
