Na Nova Zelândia uma garota de 13 anos, Amy Alden, perde sua mãe em um acidente de automóvel. Assim ela vai morar no Canadá com o pai, Thomas, um excêntrico inventor. Lá ela encontra alguns ovos, que tinham caído de uma árvore que fora derrubada. Criando todas as condições propícias, ela consegue chocar os ovos e de repente se torna "mãe" de uma ninhada de gansos selvagens. Acontece que estes pássaros são aves migratórias, assim ela e o pai tentam ensiná-los o caminho de uma reserva florestal, que fica há alguns dias de viagem.
