O boêmio Romeu, filho de fazendeiros do Amazonas, vive no Rio de Janeiro afirmando para os pais que é estudante. Numa festa, conhece Sonia, filha de rico industrial. Os dois iniciam um romance que chega a um impasse quando o pai da moça descobre que ela está grávida. Para solucionar o caso, o industrial oferece um cargo a Romeu, se ele casar com sua filha. O casamento é realizado e o casal vai passar a lua-de-mel nos Estados Unidos, onde Sônia vem a falecer em conseqüência de um aborto. Romeu retorna e, sem o emprego prometido pelo sogro, recorre a Marlene, sua ex-amante, que o sustentava antes do casamento.
