O filme de Rafael Conde representa, através de atuações marcantes e uma decupagem segura e eloqüente, o contexto sombrio com réstias de esperança em que se encontrava José Carlos Mata Machado naquele período. O cerco do aparelho repressivo do Estado se fechando, os companheiros sendo presos ou mortos um a um e o pesadelo da tortura são habilmente entremeados com questionamentos sobre o sentido último da militância, a influência intelectual do pai e os projetos de constituir família e ver crescer os filhos.
