Vera, presa numa fortaleza militar durante a ditadura, em 1969, conhece um soldado, Armando, que, diante da tortura, decide levar uma mensagem para a família de Vera. Assim, ele estabelece uma relação afetiva com D. Maria, mãe de Vera. Apesar dos horrores do tempo, o filme trabalha sobre a possibilidade de um diálogo entre duas pessoas solitárias e perdidas, uma senhora de alta classe média e um jovem de origem rural que veio do sul para servir o exército. Hoje, Vera, aos 70, é professora na universidade e debate com seus alunos sobre política, perdão e Hannah Arendt.
