Michael Hfuhruhurr (Steve Martin) é o maior neurocirurgião do planeta. Após atingir Dolores Benedict (Kathleen Turner) em um acidente de carro, Michael salva sua vida usando uma técnica por ele inventada. Quando Dolores se recupera Michael logo se apaixona por ela, casando-se em seguida. Entretanto, Dolores está apenas interessada no dinheiro do médico, enquanto que ele jamais se recuperou da morte de sua antiga esposa. O casal parte para Viena, onde Michael participará de uma convenção médica. Lá ele conhece o Dr. Alfred Necessiter (David Warner), que o apresenta à sua coleção de cérebros, mantidos em laboratório. Para a surpresa de Michael, ele inicia contato telepático com um dos cérebros, por quem acaba se apaixonando.
