Bertha é viúva e mora sozinha numa chácara isolada na serra catarinense. Começando a enfrentar dificuldades para manter a propriedade funcionando, Bertha vive pressionada pelo filho que deseja que ela vá morar com ele em um bairro nobre de Florianópolis. Ao saber da chegada de um grupo de haitianos em Santa Catarina, Bertha decide trazer o haitiano Bastide para trabalhar e morar com ela, alimentando a hostilidade de seu filho. O convívio transforma a relação de trabalho entre Bertha e Bastide em uma relação de amizade sincera entre duas pessoas de culturas diferentes que compartilham ideias e sentimentos comuns.
