Em 1954, Sonny Burns e Gunner Casselman são dois jovens de Indianápolis, que voltam para casa após terem servido na Guerra da Coréia. Na verdade Sonny nem saiu do país e ficou todo o tempo em Kansas City, mas Gunner por sua vez ficou no Japão e acabou sendo ferido com estilhaços de granada. Os dois estudaram no mesmo colégio e agora se reencontraram no trem que ruma para Indianápolis. Sonny é introvertido e no colégio era apenas um fotógrafo de um pequeno jornal, enquanto Gunner esbanjava auto-confiança e tinha sido um astro no futebol americano. Sonny tem uma namorada, Buddy, mas não sabe se está interessado em casar com ela e nem se quer passar o resto da sua vida em Indianápolis. Enquanto isso Gunner se apaixona por Marty Pilcher, uma sensual judia. Sonny, por sua vez, sente-se muito atraído por Gail Ann Thayer, uma deslumbrante morena que preenche as suas fantasias.
