Cientista sofre um terrível acidente quando tenta usar seu novo invento - uma revolucionária máquina de teletransporte. Sem perceber, entra na máquina um inseto cujo DNA será transferido para o cientista - que logo irá se transformar numa mosca. Clássico da ficção científica baseado num conto de George Langelaan publicado pela primeira vez em 1957 numa edição da revista Playboy. Dirigido por Kurt Neumann, o filme se tornou uma das maiores bilheterias do estúdio Fox naquele ano e o maior sucesso comercial na carreira do diretor - que nunca soube disso, uma vez que ele morreu apenas um mês antes da estréia. Houve ainda duas sequências: "O Retorno da Mosca" (1959) e "A Maldição da Mosca" (1965). Em 1986 o filme original foi refilmado por David Cronenberg.
