Eastwood interpreta um estranho misterioso que surge das escaldantes areias do deserto e cavalga decidido para amedrontada cidade do Lago. Após cometer três assassinatos e um estupro em vinte minutos, o Estranho é contratado pela cidade para protegê-la de três pistoleiros fugidos da prisão. Ele pinta então toda a cidade de vermelho, renomeia-a de "Inferno" e a vida naquela cidade jamais será a mesma.
