Em 15 de agosto de 1947, a Índia conquistou a sua independência. Neste exato momento, à meia-noite, nasceram duas crianças em uma maternidade. No entanto, uma enfermeira decidiu trocá-los: Saleem, filho indesejado de uma mãe pobre, foi criado no lugar de Shiva, o filho biológico de um casal rico. A história dos dois garotos será para sempre ligada ao destino político do país, principalmente quando a Índia entra em guerra, e eles se encontram em lados opostos na batalha.
