Gloria (Dominique Swain), seu namorado Danny (Scott Bairstow) e Jeff (Henry Thomas), o melhor amigo do casal, se preparam para seu último fim de semana juntos no Brasil. Os três são americanos e estão agora em Angra dos Reis, sendo que logo Danny terá que retornar aos Estados Unidos. Andrew (José Wilker), pai de Gloria, está falido, sobrevivendo graças à ajuda de seu sócio. Ele pede à filha e seus amigos que leve com eles Marcos (Sebastian DeVicente), filho de seu sócio. Os quatro partem então para um passeio de barco, onde se divertem bastante e tomam algumas caipirinhas para relaxar. Danny e Jeff decidem mergulhar, deixando Marcos e Gloria conversando. Eles acabam se beijando e são surpreendidos pelos amigos, que acabaram de voltar do mergulho. Irritado, Danny joga Marcos no mar e sai com o barco para uma ilha próxima, na intenção de dar um susto nele. Entretanto, quando retornam para pegá-lo, Marcos simplesmente desapareceu.
