Num futuro não muito distante, um desastre ambiental causa estranhos fenômenos: em alguns lugares a gravidade desaparece e as pessoas que sofrem de tristeza são vitimadas por uma doença fatal, que congela de repente o coração. John (Joaquin Phoenix) e sua mulher, Elena (Claire Danes), uma famosa patinadora de gelo, vivem há anos separados: ele na Polônia e ela em Nova York. Esse tempo distanciou o casal e John vai a Nova York para, finalmente, acertar os detalhes da separação. Porém ele percebe que algo estranho aconteceu com sua esposa e as pessoas que a cercam.
