Gilliatt, um pescador que se tornou contrabandista na ilha de Guernsey, concorda em transportar uma bela mulher para a costa francesa no ano de 1800. Ela diz que vai para a França com esperança de resgatar o seu irmão da guilhotina. Gilliatt se apaixona e se sente traído quando descobre mais tarde que essa mulher é uma condessa que ajuda Napoleão a planejar uma invasão da Inglaterra. Na realidade, porém, a "condessa" é uma agente inglesa que trabalha para impedir esta invasão. Quando Gilliatt descobre isso, ele retorna à França para resgatar a mulher cujo verdadeiro propósito foi descoberto pelos franceses.
