Antes do Cinema Novo revolucionar o cenário cinematográfico brasileiro, um jovem artesão e cineasta baiano já havia pavimentado o início da jornada de alguns dos maiores e mais populares filmes da história do país. O documentário conta fragmentos da história do cineasta Roberto Pires, através de alguns recortes de sua vida e jornada pelas suas obras, intercalando imagens de arquivo, cenas de seus filmes e uma entrevista com seu filho que também é cineasta, Petrus Pires, acompanhados de uma narração poética e uma trilha sonora inspirada em seu filme Abrigo Nuclear.
