Numa pacata cidade, vivem três irmãs – Madalena, Carminha e a jovem e sonhadora Teresa, por quem o namorado José nutre um sentimento arrebatador e possessivo. No dia em que José vai pedi-la em casamento, um encontro no porto da cidade sela o destino de Teresa: ela se apaixona por Antônio, um viajante que está de passagem pela cidade. A partir deste ponto, a trama se desenrola em função da espera de Teresa pelo retorno de Antônio. A espera contagia a todos e as personagens passam a viver na expectativa de que algo mude em suas vidas.
