Iniciado nos anos 1980, o bem-sucedido processo de tombamento patrimonial que preserva a história arquitetônica do bairro do Bixiga encontra-se em risco constante, mas segue defendido pela comunidade. Quando as obras de uma linha de metrô revelam vestígios materiais da existência do primeiro quilombo urbano reconhecido na história do estado, a comunidade afrodescendente e aliados se unem na tentativa de evitar mais um apagamento de sua história. O documentário é um retrato das várias iniciativas populares de resistência de um dos bairros mais diversos e culturalmente pulsantes da capital paulista.
