Carter Page III (Woody Harrelson) tem um trabalho bastante atípico. Ele vive de acompanhar senhoras da elite de Washington a óperas, jantares e jogos de cartas. Por isso, quando Lynn Lockner (Kristin Scott Thomas), a esposa de um senador, encontra seu amante morto, é a Carter que ela pede ajuda. Para protegê-la, ele diz ter sido a pessoa que descobriu o corpo. Mas esse gesto de bondade tornará Carter o maior suspeito do assassinato. De repente ele se vê preso numa rede de intrigas e rumores. Abandonado pelos amigos, só resta a Carter correr contra o tempo e tentar provar sua inocência.
