No sul dos Estados Unidos, em 1932, a sífilis havia se tornado uma epidemia entre as comunidades afro-americanas. Preocupado com a rapidez com que a doença se espalha pela região, o governo decide criar um programa de tratamento no único hospital negro da localidade. Infelizmente, o tratamento acaba perdendo seu apoio financeiro e é fechado. A partir daí, tem início uma das mais horríveis traições da história da humanidade. Um grupo de doutores cria um novo programa médico que apenas finge estar tratando a doença. Na verdade, eles estão realizando um estudo sobre o efeito da sífilis em homens negros, para comprovar se eles são biologicamente iguais ou diferentes dos brancos. Durante anos, 600 homens foram submetidos a essa humilhação, iludidos com uma cura que nunca chegaria.
