Um adolescente, Leland P. Fitzgerald (Ryan Gosling), é encarcerado após assassinar Ryan Pollard (Michael Welch), um menino retardado. Pearl Madison (Don Cheadle) é o professor da ala especial da prisão onde Leland está confinado, sendo também um aspirante a escritor. Pearl pretende pegar a história de Leland e transformá-la num livro, especialmente ao descobrir que um famoso romancista, Albert Fitzgerald (Kevin Spacey), é o pai de Leland. A investigação de Pearl descobre alguns efeitos do crime em todos os envolvidos, incluindo Harry (Martin Donovan) e Karen Pollard (Ann Magnuson), os pais da vítima. Becky Pollard (Jena Malone), uma adolescente viciada em drogas, é ao mesmo tempo a ex-namorada de Leland e irmã da vítima. A situação também se complica com a relação da irmã mais velha de Becky, Julie (Michelle Williams), e seu namorado, Allen Harris (Chris Klein).
