Les Galantine (Steve Buscemi) é um paparazzi sem muito sucesso. Quando encontra Toby Grace (Michael Pitt), um jovem sem-teto, o contrata como seu assistente. Les não paga nada, mas oferece quarto e comida, e os dois viram amigos. Toby, no entanto, sonha ser ator. Com a ajuda da sorte ele conhece acidentalmente K’Harma Leeds (Alison Lohman), a cantora pop do momento, e começa um relacionamento. O jovem, então, se vê dividido entre suas obrigações com Les e a chance de seguir seus sonhos. O conflito aumenta quando ele abandona seu patrão para entrar em um reality show.
