Em 1952, a Inglaterra se prepara para a coroação. Dois homens muito diferentes que têm uma coisa em comum – um rosto. John Standing e Johnny Spence se encontram por acaso em um bar da estação ferroviária. Charmoso e carismático, Johnny janta e bebe com John. Mas quando John acorda na manhã seguinte, ele está sozinho e um motorista o leva para casa. Apesar de seus protestos, ele passa a ser responsável por uma casa em ruínas e uma empresa à beira da falência. E ele se depara com – uma mulher perturbada, uma mãe viciada em drogas, uma irmã que o despreza, uma filha excêntrica e duas amantes. Mesmo querendo escapar, John se vê atraído pela nova família e sua presença começa a mudar a química da casa.
