Após sua mãe morrer em um incêndio, a jovem Anna tenta o suicídio. Como resultado, vai parar em uma clínica para tratamento. Dez meses depois, Anna continua sem lembrar o que aconteceu na noite em que a mãe morreu. Apesar disto, o dr. Silberling resolve lhe dar alta. Anna é então levada de volta para casa por seu pai, Steven, um escritor de sucesso. Lá ela encontra Rachel Summers, a enfermeira de sua mãe, como sua madrasta e também sua irmã, Alex. Logo Anna passa a ser assombrada por fantasmas, que a fazem acreditar que Rachel matou sua mãe.
