Jovem ambicioso sai de sua terra natal, no interior, e vem para o Rio de Janeiro, onde acaba se envolvendo com o jogo do bicho. Ao ser apanhado pela polícia, é sentenciado e passa algum tempo na cadeia. Ao sair da prisão, resolve mudar de vida. Casa-se, então, com Laura e tenta viver honestamente. Mas Laura precisa fazer uma cirurgia de urgência e, sem dinheiro, ele resolve voltar à sua antiga vida e, assim, retorna à jogatina. Tudo vai bem até que ele resolve desafiar o poderoso Almeida, um violento banqueiro do jogo do bicho.
