Brasil, 1839. Aninha Ribeira da Silva, chamada Anita, é uma jovem de 18 anos, alegre e apaixonada, que sonha em deixar a pequena cidade onde mora. Todos os sonhos da jovem, no entanto, desaparecem quando Manuel, um artesão idoso que mora perto, a pede em casamento e sua mãe a convence a aceitar para que possa ajudar a sustentar a família. Enquanto Anita derrama lágrimas quentes por aquele casamento forçado, um jovem marinheiro italiano, condenado à morte pelo tribunal marcial de Gênova, desembarca no Rio de Janeiro.
