Numa Los Angeles em meio aos anos 20, um dublê sofre um acidente que o leva à um hospital gravemente ferido. Com uma fratura na perna e psicologicamente instável, o homem encontra uma garotinha com o braço quebrado. Ele começa, então, a contar uma delirante história fantástica sobre heróis míticos em um mundo sinistro. Ao passo que a história se desenrola e as emoções dos personagens transcendem, a linha entre realidade e imaginação começa a se partir.
