Depois de viver seus 17 anos sentindo-se deslocado, Jones Dillon (Elijah Wood) abandona a faculdade no seu primeiro dia de aula. Ele se muda para um velho prédio de apartamentos onde logo se torna um embaraço na vida de seus estranhos novos vizinhos, incluindo uma fotógrafa temperamental (Franka Potente) e uma pensativa aspirante a atriz (Mandy Moore). Quando ele não está ocupado em flertar com as garotas ou aprendendo como viver sozinho, tentando ser um escritor, Jones divide seu tempo evitando peguntas sobre sua mãe alcoólatra (Perkins), escrevendo cartas para um pai ausente e vivendo uma vida cheia de fantasias. Um acidente o força a ver a realidade, forçando Jones a crescer e decidir o que realmente quer.
