Durante a Guerra do Vietnã, um avião de reconhecimento é abatido por um míssil vietcongue. O único sobrevivente é o tenente-coronel Iceal Hambleton (Gene Hackman), codinome Bat 21, que cai atrás das linhas inimigas. Em razão de Iceal ter sempre feito planos de guerra atrás de uma escrivaninha, lhe falta experiência de sobrevivência em combate. Ele é forçado a se adaptar, enquanto é cercado pelo inimigo por todos os lados. Enquanto a força aérea planeja uma arriscada missão de resgate, Iceal é ajudado por um piloto, o capitão Bartholomew Clark (Danny Glover), codinome Birddog, que não pode pousar para apanhar Hambleton devido à atividade inimiga, mas o orienta através do rádio. Na verdade um não sabe o nome do outro e eles só usam codinomes, pois podem estar sendo interceptados pelo inimigo, o que de fato está acontecendo.
