Na noite de seu baile de formatura, Freya McAIlister começa a ouvir vozes e é diagnosticada como esquizofrênica. Acaba sendo levada para um hospital onde fica por oito anos. Um suposto médico, Dr Michael Welles, diz para Freya que ela não é louca, mas tem o dom de ouvir os pensamentos das pessoas que estão ao seu redor. Após conseguir a alta da paciente, o médico a ensina a dominar o seu dom. No entanto, Freya descobre que Welles trabalha para o FBI, e que ela será recrutada para solucionar complexos casos, praticamente insolúveis.
