Estados Unidos, anos 50. Meg e Susan são duas irmãs que perdem os pais em um acidente e, por ordem judicial, passam a morar na casa de uma tia liberal chamada Ruth. Mas Ruth também é uma mulher perturbada, que defende radicalmente seus três filhos homens, e passa a infernizar a vida das garotas - em especial Meg, que passa a ser alvo de torturas. A única esperança das garotas é David, um garoto vizinho da família e testemunha das atrocidades que passam a ser praticadas contra elas no porão da casa de Ruth. Baseado em uma trágica história real.
