Desde os 12 anos, Dan Mahowny (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) é viciado em jogo e não passa um dia sem efetuar algum tipo de aposta, seja em cassinos, corridas de cavalos ou outros esportes. Seu prazer, no entanto, não está no lucro, mas no excitante ato de jogar.
