Troy Gable (Colin Hanks) era um jovem cheio de dúvidas, que sofria pressão de seu pai (Tom Hanks), detestava ser estudante de Direito e sonhava ter outras opções de escolha. Para isso, ele larga a universidade e pega o primeiro que trabalho que aparece onde conhece O Grande Buck Howard (John Malkovich), um mentalista famoso que viveu momentos de glória no Tonight Show de Johnny Carson. Este foi o primeiro passo de Troy para mudar para sempre sua perspectiva de vida e ainda conhecer um novo amor.
