Lance Barton (Chris Rock) é um comediante negro que tem por sonho atuar em uma lendária casa de show em Nova York antes que ela feche suas portas para sempre. Porém, em uma noite ele acaba sendo atropelado por um caminhão e morre. Ao chegar ao paraíso, ainda sem saber direito o que tinha ocorrido, ele conhece King (Chazz Palminteri) e Keyes (Eugene Levy), os anjos que o retiraram da Terra por engano. Para corrigir seu erro, King oferece a Lance que ele retorne à Terra novamente em outro corpo, proposta esta que é aceita. Porém, ao chegar novamente à Terra Lance percebe que agora é Charles Wellington (Brian Rhodes), um poderoso empresário branco que é inimigo de Sontee (Regina King), a mulher pela qual Lance é apaixonado. Com isso, enquanto Sontee busca se aproveitar do dinheiro de Wellington para projetos filantrópicos, Lance irá aproveitar seu novo corpo para enfim poder realizar seu grande sonho.
