Liam Case (Cuba Gooding Jr.) é um coletor de lixo - e um herói. Alguns anos atrás ele resgatou uma garotinha de um carro em chamas, pondo em risco sua própria vida e ganhando uma terrível cicatriz pelos seus esforços. Mas a fama pode vir e ir em quinze minutos, e seu passado está completamente esquecido. Perdido e sozinho, Liam busca consolo nas bebidas. Mas quando ele se vê no meio de um roubo a banco, leva um tiro para proteger uma bela garota que trabalha no caixa. Aguardando no hospital, ele planeja pôr as coisas em ordem procurando vingança contra os ladrões que os abandonaram à morte. Infelizmente para ele, o detetive Terry Subcott (Ray Liotta) o vigia como principal suspeito de vários assassinatos brutais de vigilantes.
