O sargento da Força Aérea americana Joe Fitzpatrick conhece e casa-se com a bela modelo Maggie Putnam na véspera do embarque para a Espanha. Enquanto espera pelo marido, a nova Sra. Fitzpatrick escreve uma carta para ele referindo-se "a uma surpresa maravilhosa que poderia acontecer a um casal". Joe naturalmente supõe que ela está grávida, mas a surpresa em questão é um fabuloso carro que ele ganhou numa rifa. A esposa e o carro transformam-se em motivo de inveja para o toureiro mais famoso da Espanha e ainda por cima causa suspeita no oficial comandante.
