Durante a corrida do ouro Arvella Whipple (Glenn Close), uma viúva com três filhos, se muda de Massachusetts para Lucky Diggins, na Califórnia. Trata-se de um pequeno lugarejo onde todos sonham em enriquecer com o ouro menos ela, que apenas deseja uma vida melhor para sua família. California Morning Whipple (Jena Malone), a filha mais velha, que tem 13 anos, está profundamente insatisfeita com a decisão da sua mãe. Ela é uma adolescente que adora ler e odeia a idéia de cuidar de garimpeiros, já que a mãe administra a pensão local. Ela também não suporta seu nome, assim o muda para Lucy e sonha em ir embora. Gradativamente ela muda de opinião, ao presenciar a luta da mãe para superar as dificuldades.
