Após passar alguns anos em uma escola especial, Carla Tate (Juliette Lewis) foi "graduada" e poderá voltar para casa de seus pais em São Francisco. Mas, apesar de ser intelectualmente limitada, Carla planeja morar sozinha, ter uma vida independente e também se libertar da presença da mãe, que a vigia de forma sufocante. Este desejo de ter seu próprio apartamento é aumentado quando conhece Danny McMann (Giovanni Ribisi), um jovem que como ela é mentalmente "lento", mas mora sozinho. Em pouco tempo Carla e Danny estão namorando e já pensam em se casar.
