Quando Betsy (Molly Ringwald) anuncia a familia que vai se casar, o pai dela, Eddie (Alan Alda), sonha em fazer uma grande festa. Mas ele está em dificuldades financeiras, enquanto a família do noivo é bem afortunada. Para competir com eles e arcar as despesas, Eddie pede ajuda a seu cunhado, uma pessoa não muito inocente, que aproveita a situação para fazer favor a um gângster com quem tem negócios.
